Newsha Tavakolian is 26 years old. She has been working as a photographer in the Iranian press since she was 16. In 2002 she started working internationally, covering Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. One of the main focus points in Newsha’s work are women’s issues in the Middle East. Her pictures have been published in Time Magazine, Newsweek, Stern, New York Times Magazine and newspaper, Le Figaro in France and NRC Handelsblad in the Netherlands. In 2003 Newsha was the runner-up in the Picture of the Year award, magazine feature. In 2006 she was selected, along with 11 other photographers, by World Press Photo for the Joop Swart Masterclass. In 2006 she won the National Geographic Society award. Mothers of Martyrs has been published, along with other EVE Photographers members, in the Motherhood project, in Brazil and Georgia, PDN online, and is soon to be published in Italy. The whole EVE Photographers first common project was screened at the Lianzhou Photo Festival 2006, Visa pour l’Image 2006, Angkor Photo Festival, and Gijon International Photofestival.
