About me:
Dami Akinnusi is an awarding winning documentary filmmaker and broadcast journalist, working internationally. Her first feature Malcolm’s Echo: The Legacy of Malcolm X, won the African Movie Academy Award for best documentary (2009). She has worked for major broadcasters and her work has screened on ITV, Current TV, Channel 4, BBC, BBC1Xtra, MTV, Discovery, Islam Channel and Nigerian, Ghanaian and South African networks. Her films include Bleach My Skin White (ITV 2005), the first to tackle skin bleaching during primetime and through her company Darkling Productions other TV commissions include: I used to be a Gangsta, Finding Inner Peace, Jude Law’s Nanny, and Go to Your Room: The Bedroom MC Competition (2009-11).
She is a BBC/Skillset Millennium Award winner, awarded the BBC’s Broadcast Journalism and Directing training. She is also a recipient of the Unltd Award for social entrepreneurs, and received her BSc(hons) degree in Psychology and Performing Arts, from the university of Derby. In addition to her work in broadcast and film, she is one of the hosts of The Images of Black Women Film Festival UK and is a former talk show host and producer on Powerjam and Genesis FM radio.
I'm passionate about:
Her independent works focus on critical social issues and she often speaks on panels around themes on identity, race and the impact of media and representation. As a film and media -maker she has facilitated and tutored in educational institutions in both England and New York. She is currently developing and producing documentaries including her second feature, "99% Occupied", with the support of Women Make Movies, NYC.
