I am a Pakistani-American author and designer based in Austin, Texas. Saffron Dreams, my latest novel is about the struggles of a 9/11 Muslim widow. See http://www.shailaabdullah.com/
My debut book, Beyond the Cayenne Wall, is an award-winning collection of stories about Pakistani women struggling to find their individualities despite the barriers imposed by society. Among other accolades, the book won the Norumbega Jury Prize for outstanding Fiction and the DIY Festival Award. I also received a grant from the Hobson Foundation for Saffron Dreams.

My creative writing focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of Pakistani women and their often unconventional choices in life. It also deals with the Asian experience in America, the conflict between the two worlds and the culture of my adopted country.

Tannu is a metaphorically caged dove trying to live up to the expectations that come with being a woman able to bear children. While the life inside her blossoms, the ghosts of her pregnancy secret haunt her. In an act of defiance against the restrictions of expectation, she refuses to give up her firstborn to the caretakers of the shrine of Shah Daullah as tradition dictates.

Sejal Hathi est une étudiante de 17 ans à la Notre Dame High School, de San Jose, Californie. En 2007, à l'âge 15 ans, Sejal a fondé Girls Helping Girls, une organisation à but non lucratif qui met en relation des jeunes filles des Etats Unis avec des jeunes filles d'autres pays. Cette organisation encourage l'estime de soi et aide les jeunes femmes à dialoguer, à s'occuper les unes des autres et à collaborer pour amener un changement social dans leurs communautés locales.

Voix de la Communauté: Anya Kandel, Momentus International
Anya Kandel, fondatrice et directrice de création de Momentus International, suscite une conversation mondiale parmi les jeunes. Travaillant avec de jeunes gens en Californie, au Ghana et aux Pays Bas, son organisation fournit un espace créatif grâce lequel ils peuvent communiquer et se responsabiliser mutuellement via le langage universel des arts.
