(This special feature from Mexican artist Monica Mayer is presented in conjunction with Focusing on Latin America, a project of Economica: Women and the Global Economy.) Mónica Mayer concentrates on the dichotomy of motherhood in her performance "Mothers only two." The submissive side of mothers is represented by the virgin of Guadalupe, and the strong side comes from the early Hispanic goddess Coatlicue a motherly figure from mythology. Mayer plays with the ideals of religion and profanity, and her work goes beyond the appearance of modest and ineffable characterizations of the traditional Mexican mother.
