Could Arab businesswomen shatter Western stereotypes of what it means to be empowered? For many, "Arab women" conjures up images of women cloaked in long, covering garments, restricted in their movements and constrained in their freedoms. But the rising influence of women in business and finance in the Gulf region may lead us to rethink our assumptions about what it means to have and exercise power.

In the current culture of charitable giving, especially during the 2008-2009 global economic crisis, both donors and funding seekers tend to assume there is a finite and shrinking "pie" of resources available. This means that women's groups must compete against other worthy "causes" for money. Through the unique vehicle of women's funds--pools of money dedicated to helping women and girls--women's advocates are tapping new sources of support and challenging the idea that there is only so much to go around. In the process, they are expanding the pie for everyone and ensuring that resources are distributed more equitably.

Around the world, a woman’s economic well-being is tied to her marital status--whether she is single, divorced or widowed. The fate of her marriage or of her partner can propel a woman into personal economic crisis. While monetary support and debt relief can undoubtedly help women in the most difficult circumstances--such as India’s cotton farmer widows--their situation raises deeper questions about how transactions related to marriage make women economically vulnerable, and what can be done about it.

What role should governments play in providing basic necessities for their people? And who fills the gaps when governments fall short? The aftermath of the 2007-2008 bread crisis that erupted in Egypt highlights that women compensate when governments and others can't supply basic necessities such as health care, education and social services. However, when social provisions are strengthened, women are able to thrive and make numerous contributions, including economic ones.
