What is the key to women's economic empowerment?

There's no doubt that microfinance institutions have had a tremendous impact on the lives of many people around the world, particularly women. But is microcredit AN answer or THE answer? Is it a sustainable solution or a temporary fix? What else can be done to help poor families become economically self-sufficient? Is the added power of the Internet making it easier to solve problems or widening the divide?

And be sure to listen to the podcast of I.M.O.W.'s discussion with Jessica Jackley, co-founder of Kiva.org, and the transcript of our Web chat with her.

Empowering women monetarily

There is no doubt that today women's access to money, property, and the possibility of wealth is vital to their empowerment.

But Clio reminds today's women that it is also important to understand how men's law and economic theory has combined in the past to shut women out of the economic realm. It has been a difficult struggle for married women, especially in western countries, to achieve any property rights or control over their own earnings. Today's women tend to forget too easily about women's historical struggles to gain economic parity with men and to become less economically dependent. Microfinance is one piece, and a very enabling piece, of a much bigger picture. See "Clio Talks Back" for additional insights.

Women supporting women to change the current money paradigm

Karen I agree with what you are saying. Microfinance shows the power of small help and changing perception of the poor, illiterate, women, poverty and banking. But microfinance is not going to change the fundamental assumptions and fraudulant practices of current banking and banksters funding the war-military-intelligenge-media-academia-pharma complex. We as women need to initiate the change by asking simple yet powerful questions that can lift us out of the dominator paradigm.
