Market Day
Market Day is every day in Laos. This woman and her child were at a local morning market outside Pakse, Laos. Everywhere I looked there were smiling women and children; the warmth of everyone I met there still remains in my heart.



Shopping in Laos
On a short, four-day trip into Laos from Vietnam we were traveling through the countryside on the Boloven Plain. The guide was excited to show us the weavings from this area. I was taken by the sight of these women trying on, comparing, and ultimately bartering for a new sinh, the traditional long-wrap skirt. Baby or not, this was the place to do some roadside exchanges.



Faces
This photograph was taken at the BacHa Sunday Market. BacHa is approximately 100 kilometers from the train station at Lao Cai, meaning it takes about three hours by van or car on a rutted, sometimes muddy mountain road. This woman in green had walked from her home to attend the weekly market. Most women who come to the market are members of the minority tribes who come to buy and sell their products, that is weavings, skirts, cloth. I have many photos from this visit but for me the "Green Lady," as I like to call her, epitomizes the weary road these women trod for things we take for granted.
