Compassion & Awareness

Sense of Compassion and Sense of Awareness are two mixed media pieces in my Five Senses Series. I completed them in 2007, using gouache, ink, spray paint and a particle board as materials.

Sense of Compassion, 2007 | gouche, ink, spray paint

This piece was inspired by my belief that, at the end of the day, we're all called to love. That is, we're called to love others as we love ourselves.

As an artist, and daughter of devout conservative Christians, religion has always been at the forefront of my mind.

Sense of Awareness, 2007 | gouche, ink, spray paint

Awareness is one of my most important senses and is vital to my life emotionally, spiritually, mentally, physically and socially.

While driving to work one morning, I heard a story of the Buddhist monks in Burma. The report discussed Aung San Suu Kyi, a renown promoter of human and civil rights. I was appalled, interested and amazed all at the same time. I was also digusted with myself for not knowing who she was.
