Puna
These images are from Puna, an area located on the east side of Hawaii Island near the foot of an active volcano. It has a very curious topography, where in a day's trek you can encounter both jungle growth and lava fields. The land is young and active and though this creates a tremendous backdrop to the community, there is an accepted risk living in the shadow of such a precarious and mercurial hot spot.
The people who compose this community moved here from the continental mainland. Their exodus stems from their disenchantment from the material and competitive social system characterizing American life today. They live in accordance to nature. The women of the community study herbal medication, give natural birth, farm organically, cook with natural foods and homeschool their children utilizing the academic philosophy of Ruldolf Steiner's Waldorf School.
