It is uplifting to know that such a young woman artist is so profound and insightful to use her talent to address the American Society's interminably wasteful lifestyle. Kim, you make me and spaa proud!
Bounty
Land of Plenty
Bounty is a visual statement on domesticity and immigration in the land of plenty -the United States.
Bounty refers to the boundlessness of goods and opportunities that the United States has to offer. At the same time the hidden message to this idea is also the boundlessness of waste that comes along with the surplus of goods, and also the boundless invisible barriers that impede many of its inhabitants from those opportunities.
Therefore I wanted to make a piece that will show a vision of hope that will reconcile this dichotomy by making treating one a disposable consumer product as if it was a valuable object. I wanted it to possess the status of a valuable heirloom object. The object is a paper towel.
By embroidering my own hair on this paper towel I hope it will allow viewers to be troubled about the absurdity of embroidering hair on a disposable paper towel, just as I am also troubled about the absurdity of the ideals and promises that make up this Land of Plenty.
